Officer research is one of the most rewarding of all the researches, and there are several components that go into it. Firstly, officer abilities are what increase the strength of your ships. So when you increase attack, defense and health of an officer, it gets you closer to the next level of upping your ship’s strength.

So as you can see on this horizon, to get to the next attack bonus of the ship, I need to get to 1500 Attack. My current officer attack value adds up to 1354. On a miner, your fighting ability might not matter much, but on one of your warships this matters a lot.
The next way this is beneficial is on away team missions. If my officers had had more health, they would have had a higher than 86% chance of completing this mission.
So where do we find all this research? It’s scattered across multiple trees, and a lot of it is buried pretty deeply.
